New Year’s Greetings from President Mau-Chung Frank Chang

February 2019

As the Lunar New Year approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for your tireless effort and dedication in the past year, as well as to wish you a most magnificent new year in 2019.

In 2018, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of re-establishing National Chiao Tung Unviersity in Hsinchu. It was a truly monumental year with a number of exciting accomplishments that will enable NCTU to scale to new heights in the future. I am most delighted to share them with you.

First and foremost, we entered a new era when National Yang Ming University (NYMU) and NCTU mutually agreed forming a co-working committee to kick off the merging process. Both universities have graduated a large number of outstanding alumni who have played leading roles in fields such as medical care, biomedicine, semiconductor, electronics, and information technologies. The two universities joining together to become one of the most significant institutes will make an even greater impact, and help improve higher education in Taiwan by providing high quality education to nurture young minds with new concepts, new ideas, and new knowledge to become pillars and role models of society.

Increasing international competitiveness has long been a goal of NCTU – we have plans to recruit 120 bright young scholars to join the university. In this regard, we are most grateful to alumni and enterprises who have generously contributed to the “Junior Chair Professorship” endowment fund. We are happy to report that over 30 scholars have already come aboard thanks to your support.

To foster synergism and promote international recognition, NCTU has set a plan to create the most comprehensive Department of Electrical Engineering in the nation by 2021. This is accomplished by combining the programs of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Electronic Engineering together. With such an integration, new courses and curriculum can be effectively developed with cross-disciplinary subjects, as well as the embodiment of frontier research topics. The high level and quality of education and research in this field will attract high caliber students and faculty members.

Last Fall, we kicked off the newly created “Distinguished Visiting Professorship Program (DVP)” with the focus on teaching fundamental sciences. A number of world renowned educators have been invited to demonstrate their new concepts of teaching strategies and methodologies via English-based lectures. Freshman classes were highly motivated by these courses that enriched their learning experiences and interests.

Last year marked distinctive advancement of NCTU, thus energizing a giant step toward the making of a “Great University”. None of this would have been possible without your marvelous work in concert. The bright future is ahead of us. Let us continue acting together to go far and reach high!
