交通大學28日頒贈名譽博士學位予美國國家工程院院士Asad Madni,表彰他開發智慧型微小感測器,讓人類得以更加瞭解宇宙奧秘,並研發車用穩定系統保障人類生命安全之貢獻卓越。
 
Madni院士出生於印度,為美國加州大學洛杉磯分校電機系碩士及加州海岸大學工程博士,並膺選為美國國家工程院院士、美國發明家學會院士。1992至2006年擔任財星雜誌500大公司BEI Technologies總裁、營運長及技術長期間,帶領研究團隊進行智慧型微小感測器之開發,研發成果廣泛應用於太空、商業及運輸產業,大幅度增進哈伯太空望遠鏡內星際追蹤儀控制系統之精準度與穩定度,攝取極致之天文影像,讓人類得以瞭解宇宙奧秘。另一項革命性地MEMS GyroChip® 技術也廣泛應用於汽車之電子穩定翻滾保護系統,保障千萬人生命安全。
 
張懋中校長表示,Madni院士學術成就卓越,尖端研究領域包括高速儀器及訊號處理、智慧型感測器網絡及智能電網應用。樂於指導學術及產業界,將其知識及經驗分享予後進,是一位具熱情、有影響力的世界級科學家與企業家,對社會的影響力及貢獻,足為交大師生共同學習的楷模。
 
除了具遠見的領導和開拓性技術貢獻,Madni院士一生致力於慈善事業、提升人類生活水平。他深信「教育是另一種自由」,無私地指導學生、工程師和管理階層,並資援來自貧困家庭、沒有機會接觸高等教育的學生繼續深造,成為傑出的科學家和企業領導者。Madni院士也是無私地貢獻者,為教育和學生計畫捐贈大筆費用和實物;2011年建立一項挑戰,鼓勵美國國家工程院院士會員捐贈超過50萬美元,啟動對國家和世界至關重要的計畫,包括氣候變化、太陽能、反向工程大腦(用以研究阿兹海默病、帕金森氏症)等人類將面臨的巨大挑戰。
 
Madni院士表示,這一代人為下一代留下最矛盾的遺產。提供前所未有的進步,也留下一個動蕩的世界;醫學科學和醫療保健大幅進步,改善生活質量和壽命,卻也面臨世界暖化、能源和水資源短缺的問題,而世界市場經濟破壞及持續的戰爭,更是下一代人必須解決的挑戰,作家狄更斯名著《雙城記》之引言「這是最好的時代,也是最壞的時代」可能是最好的描述。「然而,我深信能看到越來越多的工程師、科學家和技術人員,投入研究、樹立推進人類進步的旗幟。」Madni院士說,美國國家工程院召集來自世界各地的專家學者,提出人類將面臨的14項巨大挑戰,幫助人們和地球茁壯成長,包括太陽能經濟、乾淨水資源、生物醫學及工程科學。
 
Madni院士也提出美國國家工程院發表的「2020年工程師」和「2020年工程師教育」報告,藉由分析全球動態、社會需求及科學技術研究,描述2020年需要的工程師屬性及教育機構將如何培育工程師。Madni院士熱切地期望,交大年輕的工程學生們,將能以專業、獨特的方式面對挑戰,「這是一個相當大的挑戰,但我有信心,在張校長遠見卓識的領導下,以及交大強調轉型跨學科工程的教育中,新一代工程師將準備好迎接挑戰並帶來無限創造力。」
 
 
Madni院士專題演講內容:
我非常謙卑和感謝的接受這個學位,在我開始演講之前我將分享一則故事,在我的年代,科學和科技必須更加了解這個世界和宇宙才能前進,我們也留下了全球暖化、乾淨水源短缺和對環境的損害,並將這些災害帶進了城市和生活。
 
四季帶給我們失望和希望的轉換,現在我們將重燃希望,以無限的可能和機會讓人類去挑戰和創新發展。交大的年輕學子們正在獨特的學習道路上,能夠學習和發展讓人們生活更好的想法;到了2020年,大學將訓練下一代的學子創新和發想的能力,並由工程師來處理問題並帶領人類拓展眼界。
 
2015年8月3日一場演講中我了解到渴望和熱情是學術研究的根源,要處理的問題不僅止於個人,而是周遭的人,因人性而出發廣泛的問題。
 
這些重大的挑戰包含:
‧Make solar energy economical 長期來看,穩定的能源來源很重要。工程師要想如何改善能源效率以及降低這些能源的成本。
 
‧Provide energy from fusion太陽能轉換的過程。要如何得到更高更完整的能量轉換和產能?
 
‧Develop carbon sequestration methods 全球暖化是真的,我太太說法是「有什麼正在發生在這個世界上」,我無法告訴你是什麼,但他正在發生。二氧化碳量持續增加,我們要是不做任何的行動,海平面的上升已在威脅著我們。
 
‧Manage the nitrogen cycle 蛋白質的基本元素,氮是空氣中的物質,同時能被使用在生命週期當中。
 
‧Provide access to clean water 許多貧窮國家無法取得乾淨水源,淨水主要是除去水中雜質和沙子,在貧窮國家中無法完成。現今科技有更好的淨水科技,運用奈米技術,將水由右而左的穿越奈米層達到淨水效果,可多想想這樣的科技。
 
‧Restore and improve urban infrastructure我們已經見到許多不同的汽車科技,而今汽車業致力於安全性發展,包含車子和車子的溝通、車子和駕駛者的溝通、車子和環境的溝通這三個層面。現代車擁有盲角觀測器、導車安全等科技,倘若車子完全自動化後卻無法由人為操控,要如何解決失靈的問題?誰能承擔感測器品質不一所造成的風險?
 
‧Advance health informatics 有多少人還在使用手機打電話?你們在網路上搜索、用社群媒體,還有人在打電話嗎?在單一的手機設備上我們擁有更廣泛的功能,其中包含醫療資訊,資料的存取和安全將會是最重要的問題,不能出錯。
 
‧Engineer better medicines藥方會依照每個人年紀、病症不同,提供精準的藥品來治癒,因而我們必須取得更精準的醫療感測,測量出準確的身體問題和需要治癒的根源,以提供確實的醫療藥品。
 
‧Reverse – engineer the brain 以感測器測量大腦不同部位負責的功能和運作方式,並了解當傷者某部分受到損壞時該如何修復;如果我們能夠更加了解大腦運作,甚至能製作出更厲害的電腦。
 
‧Prevent nuclear terror 我們必須了解車子和任何會使用到核能的裝置,並思考如何妥善運用。
 
‧Secure Cyberspace 人們不了解享受科技的過程中,需要承擔的安全問題以及財務上可能的損失
 
‧Enhance virtual reality 虛擬實境是非常有趣的,手術能夠在虛擬實境中模擬實作後,確定手術過程無誤才運用到人體。這表示我們能夠完成某些我們認為不可能會成真的事物。
 
‧Advance personalized learning 不同的人會學習到不同的事物,專家在尋找不同的方式讓學生能夠更直接的學習。
 
‧Engineer the tools of scientific discovery 工程師創造了某些不存在的東西,但在工具被創造前人們並不瞭解如何使用。好比迪士尼,他們創造了某些東西,而那東西尚未出現在人類生活當中;好比探索火星的好奇心,就在科技想像和創造中被實踐了,如果沒有工程師的創新和發展,我們也無法完成探索火星的壯舉。
 
預測未來最好的方法就是發明它,科技將持續改變我們的生活和人類活動,所以工程師與科學家必須更深入的訓練,表達能力和口語訓練也需要並進,並強化團隊合作這項最重要的人格特質。

Dr. Asad Madni Received Honorary Doctorate Degree from NCTU

 

On November 28th, National Chiao Tung University granted the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering (Hon. Ph.D.) Degree to Dr. Asad M. Madni, a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, for his development of intelligent micro-sensors and systems for aerospace as well as Electronic Stability Control and Rollover Protection in passenger vehicles. His contributions have enhanced our understanding of the universe and the safety of millions of lives. 

 

Dr. Asad M. Madni, born in India, received his M.S. from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Ph.D. in Engineering from California Coast University (CCU). He is also elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering, fellow of National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Asad Madni served as President, Chief Operating Officer & CTO of BEI Technologies Inc., a Fortune 500 company, from 1992 until his retirement in 2006. He led the development and commercialization of intelligent micro-sensors and systems for aerospace, military, commercial and transportation industries, including the Extremely Slow Motion Servo Control System for Hubble Space Telescope’s Star Selector System which provided the Hubble with unprecedented accuracy and stability, resulting in truly remarkable images that have enhanced our understanding of the universe; and the revolutionary MEMS GyroChip® technology which is used worldwide for Electronic Stability Control and Rollover Protection in passenger vehicles, thereby saving millions of lives every year.

 

President Mau-Chung Frank Chang addressed that Dr. Madni's academic success is characterized by cutting-edge research in high-speed instrumentation and signal processing, intelligent sensor networks and smart grid applications. He is a passionate and influential world-class scientist and entrepreneur, and has great influence and contribution to the society. Teachers and students of NCTU should look upon Dr. Madni as a role model and learn from him. 

 

In addition to visionary leadership and pioneering technology contributions, Dr. Madni has been committed to charity and enhancing the quality of human life. He is convinced that "education is another freedom", so that he teaches students, engineers, and managers selflessly. He provides financial support to students from economically deprived families to receive higher education so that they may become outstanding scientists and business leaders. Dr. Madni is an unselfish contributor to education and student programs. In 2011, he created a program to encourage members of the National Academy of Engineering to donate more than USD$500,000 to launch programs vital to the country and the world. These include climate change, solar energy, reverse engineering of the brain (for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease) and other major challenges ahead for human beings. 

 

Dr. Madni said that, our generation is leaving behind a most paradoxical legacy to the generation following us. While we are providing them with unprecedented advances in technology that have the power to revolutionize the world in as yet unimagined ways, we are also leaving behind a world in turmoil. The medical science and healthcare will continue to improve the quality and longevity of life, but global warming, energy, clean water shortage, ethical violations, economic devastation of world markets, as well as major on-going wars are some of the challenges that their generation will have to address. However, he quoted the famous lines from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” He looks forward that an increasing number of engineers, scientists and technicians that will be called upon to carry and advance the banner of human progress. The US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) convened a diverse committee of experts from around the world to identify the Grand Challenges facing humanity. The committee proposed 14 challenges such as solar energy economical, clean water resources and medical science and engineering science.

He hopes that young engineering students from NCTU will face the challenges in a unique and professional way. “This is quite a challenge as I am sure you all appreciate but I am confident that with the visionary leadership of President Chang and his emphasis on transformational interdisciplinary engineering education, the outstanding faculty at NCTU and the strategic vision with which leading academic institutions are currently preparing the next generation of engineers, they will be prepared to confront these challenges with excitement and creativity.”
